Google launches balloon-powered Internet access
Google announced on Monday 17 June a first step toward a new, experimental method of providing Internet access to rural, remote and underserved areas: balloon-powered Internet access. Project Loon is experimental technology that uses balloons, carried by the wind at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes, to beam Internet access to the ground, providing connection speeds similar to today’s 3G networks or faster.
Eaton Towers, Telkom Kenya pen 15-year deal
Eaton Towers, a pan-African tower company, has announced that it has signed a deal with Telkom Kenya covering its existing portfolio of over 1,000 towers.
Airtel to invest $125 million in Gabon
Airtel has committed to invest $ 125 million in Gabon following discussions at the New York Forum in Libreville. The New York Forum AFRICA, was held in Libreville, Gabon; under the Patronage of H.E. President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon, in collaboration with the government of Gabon. The New York Forum Africa 2013 focused on the initiatives necessary to make several opportunities a reality. The over 600 business and political leaders that gathered in Libreville engaged in collaborative sessions to draw up a road map for individual businesses as well as national policy makers.
Clickatell to capitalise on Rwanda’s mobile money growth
The world’s first bank-grade managed service for mobile money was launched over the last year in an agreement between Visa and the Government of Rwanda. This mobile money platform allows Visa to host and manage all aspects of the mobile money program on behalf of the Bank of Kigali and Urwego Opportunity Bank, through Clickatell’s mobile technology solutions.
MTN introduces new suit of Blackberry service plans
In an effort to simplify data access and offer more choice to BlackBerry customers, MTN announced on 21 June that from 14th July 2013, it will introduce a new suite of BlackBerry service plans to cater for all customer needs, based on their data usage patterns.
Kenya: Intel to invest in local developers
On Wednesday 19 June Intel Corporation announced a new initiative that will see Kenyan developers become the first in Africa to benefit directly from Intel® Software and Services Group (SSG), a global division of the company. In the course of this new initiative Intel will work with Kenyan developers to provide them with design tools, resources and expert consulting. Further, Intel will this year sponsor three local tech start-ups for online training and mentorship program conducted by UC Berkeley Faculty members and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.
Innovation Dinner draws Nigeria’s tech leaders
Africa’s premier ICT news publication ITNewsAfrica, in conjunction with SAS Institute, will host the next Innovation Dinner on 26 June in Lagos, Nigeria. The theme for this exclusive event is The Changing Role of the African CIO.
Spinlet, Etisalat Nigeria make music
Spinlet, the premier international mobile music download service bringing digital distribution to emerging markets in Africa, is announcing a groundbreaking partnership with Etisalat Nigeria to create Nigeria’s first branded Spinlet music application. The New Times reports that the Rwandan government has initiated an information service delivery chain, based on the application of ICT towards socio-economic development, which is expected to be realised by means of private-public partnership.
