June 28, 2013 – Ghanaian Actress Juliet Ibrahim Blasts Nigerians Over OJB Jezreel’s Kidney Surgery “Stop Harassing Celebrities”
Juliet Ibrahim Blasts Nigerians Over OJB Jezreel’s Kidney Transplant Surgery Fundraising
“I think it’s about time I speak up on this OJB topic that most of you ignorant people are using to harass and insult celebrities. First of all, every celebrity has his or her own responsibilities n family to take care of, if a colleague is ill and needs help we do contribute in our own way to help out whichever way we can.
I don’t see why u people can’t help out as well? Who said our 1000 naira can’t amount to something that can raise the sum needed for OJB’s transplant? For you people tagging me in your tweets, im sure you know I run a kidney disease foundation, hence I know the exact cost for a kidney transplant india.I have been quiet cus. I asked the people in charge of OJB broadcast to contact my foundation because I know a kidney transplant will not cost more than 50k usd. Why are they requesting for 100k when so many cheaper deals with hospitals out there in India even in Ghana can be worked out to save OJB? To get the necessary help, those in charge of OJB fund-raising need to reach out to the right people and stop harassing. Celebrities for funds ”
Above is what actress Juliet Ibrahim shared on her Instagram page yesterday.
She is alleging that OJB Jezreel is lying for saying he needs 16 million for Kidney transplant surgery….The actress said it costs half of that to get a Kidney transplant in India.
Is this a good move to get OJB Jezreel the help he desperately needs?
Juliet Ibrahim forgot that OJB has a lot of unsettled medical bills since his kidney failed few months ago. (It costs a lot to get medical help in Nigeria)
Hmmmmm.. how insensitive.
Some folk needs to learn how to talk in certain situation.
Yes she is trying to tell us she runs a Kidney disease foundation but this seems untimely.
By the way, did she donate a dime?

Etisalat 'DOT ME' services
Etisalat harnesses information sharing with ‘DotMe’ service
ETISALAT Nigeria has announced the launch of its newest service known as DotMe, a Short Message Service (SMS)-based service that enables Etisalat mobile phone subscribers to publish information on their mobile number via SMS while on the go.
The telecommunications firm pride itself as the only network in Nigeria, and the first in the world to launch such an innovative service.
According to Etisalat, the simple, yet powerful SMS-based social bulletin board acts like a personal bulletin board that enables users to instantly publish information from their mobile via SMS, and which can easily be retrieved by their contacts, or any other persons on demand via SMS.
Explaining how the product works during a media launch in Lagos at the weekend, Etisalat’s Chief Commercial Officer, Wael Ammar said because the service is SMS-based, it is simple to use for individuals, organisations or businesses. To use this service, he said a dotter simply sends a message or an update to the service code 8900, which can then be accessed on demand by his or her followers on any network anywhere in the world as long as he or she has the dotter’s Etisalat mobile phone number.
“For a start, the dotter invites his or her contacts to follow his or her posts by asking them to text a dot, that is a full stop (.) to his or her Etisalat mobile number to retrieve his or her status, and updates this status regularly,” Ammar explained.
“And if you are a follower all you need to do is to send a dot to the Etisalat mobile number of your dotter, and you are able to receive the last post of the person you are following. For instance, sending a dot (.) to 0809xxxxxxx would result in a response SMS with the last post of the dotter.”
The DotMe service was invented and developed by Telsis. “We are delighted that Etisalat is our launch customer for DotMe” said Telsis Founder and Chairman, Jeff Wilson.
“Effective communication is good for business and good for people. DotMe complements the voice and text capabilities of mobile phones by offering a simple and ubiquitous publishing capability. Just as we call and text for many different reasons, people will find their own many and varied uses for DotMe. All Etisalat customers can now post messages and anyone, anywhere can get their status or information.”

Watches and wristband technology
Foxconn eyes smart watches with wristband technology
Foxconn unveils a wristband that can monitor user's health and sync with smartphone, amid rumors that Apple is working on its own smart watch
By Michael Kan | IDG News Service
Manufacturing giant Foxconn Technology Group also wants to ride the upcoming wave of wearable tech, and has unveiled a wristband that can monitor a user's health and sync with a smartphone.
When worn, the wristband can monitor a user's blood pressure, heart rate, and even diagnose the person's mood, said Foxconn CEO Terry Gou at the company's annual shareholder's meeting on Wednesday. Data on the wristband can then be displayed on the user's smartphone.

A demo of the wristband showed that after three minutes of use, the device will grade the user's health and diagnose the person's mood. The data collected can also be used to offer recommendations on how to improve users' health, or be shared on social networks or with health care providers.
It's unclear when the technology will arrive in the market. But Gou signaled that the wristband could be used on smart watches.
"Your phone has a big screen, so you will leave it in your pocket. A lot of information you can just look at your watch for," he said. "But the watch can also monitor your health."
Foxconn unveiled the device as rumors continue to swirl that Apple is working on its own smart watch. Foxconn has long been the maker of Apple's iPhone and iPad products, but the contract electronics supplier also counts Amazon, Sony and Microsoft as some of its other clients.
While the company is best known as a manufacturer, Foxconn is also focused on research and innovation, Gou said. It wants to hire 5,000 to 10,000 software engineers in Taiwan. In addition, the company is training its workers in mainland China to become technicians.
"We are doing these things so that we can prepare for the next generation of technology," he added.
Financially, the company is facing challenges. In the first quarter, Foxconn saw a 19.2 percent year-over-year decline in its revenue. Lower than expected demand for Apple's iPhone 5 has been cited by analysts as one reason for the revenue drop.
The company's falling stock price prompted Foxconn's CEO to apologize to shareholders on Wednesday, amid reports that the company is losing iPhone orders to rival manufacturer Pegatron.
Gou wouldn't mention Pegatron by name, but he said Foxconn's competitors were offering low prices to grab orders.
"Getting orders through low prices, is that really of any use? We want to use technology," he added.
Along with its wearable wristband, Foxconn also said it is pioneering the use of carbon nanotubes in touchscreen displays. The carbon nanotubes help make the touchscreens more durable, lighter and cheaper to produce over typical touchscreens that rely on Indium tin oxide as a conductive coating.
The manufacturing technology is already in use with many of Foxconn's clients, and will make touchscreens more prevalent, across all gadgets, including keyboards and entire surfaces of products, according to the company.

Kenya: Intel to invest in local developers
Intel Corporation today announced a new initiative that will see Kenyan developers become the first in Africa to benefit directly from Intel® Software and Services Group (SSG), a global division of the company. In the course of this new initiative Intel will work with Kenyan developers to provide them with design tools, resources and expert consulting. Further, Intel will this year sponsor three local tech start-ups for online training and mentorship program conducted by UC Berkeley Faculty members and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.
In the next 6 months, Intel aims at reaching over 400 developers and having 100 new applications created locally that will offer users differentiated experiences across mobile phones and tablets running on Intel® Architecture. The division will be led locally by Agatha Gikunda, the newly appointed Lead for Intel Software and Services Group in East Africa.
Speaking at a developers’ conference hosted by Intel that saw more than 250 developers in attendance, Danie Steyn, East Africa General Manager said “We recognize that software is a vital element of all Intel platforms and processors. Therefore, Intel Software and Services Group seeks to enhance local innovation and provide tools to developers that enable them create applications with rich user experience on devices running on Intel technology. We are very excited about the growing developer engagement in Africa and seek to increase collaborations with tech hubs, independent software vendors and universities.”
The company will collaborate with Strathmore University and University of Nairobi to provide resources in the universities’ hardware labs, build a student Developer Partner Program and integrate High Performance Computing into the university curriculum. These activities are aimed at enhancing the ability of student developers to create rich user experiences on Intel®-based hardware as well as test their software applications.
Through an established program between Intel, iHub and m:lab, Intel Software and Services Group will provide training to developers enabling them to create and port Android apps for Android-based devices running on Intel® architecture.
In addition, starting from 24th June 2013, Intel and iHub will on a quarterly basis host intensive coaching sessions for developers dubbed Ideation camps that seek to empower upcoming tech entrepreneurs and social innovators with tools to turn complex problems into great business opportunities.
“Programs that provide opportunities for local software developers to nurture their skills, to access the latest tools and to get exposure on the global stage are critical components in the growth of our local software economy. Intel’s approach to collaborate and support tech hubs, independent software vendors and universities provides a good opportunity for both upcoming and established developers to exploit.” Victor Kyalo Acting CEO, Kenya ICT Board
Intel Software and Services Group will further enable Kenyan developers to engage with more than 20,000 independent software vendors (ISV) worldwide through a collaborative online application and software development community dubbed Intel® Developer Zone.
It is a global program that enables developers to engage with Intel on topics related to software and is designed to answer today’s software development challenges. In addition, Intel Software and Services Group will also seek to build a foundation for robust solutions and industry innovation, working with the software community to set standards, establish industry benchmarks and participate in open source projects.
“As part of the investments we are making in the continent we would also like companies across Africa to be aware that Intel Capital, the global investment and M&A organization of Intel, is looking to invest in innovative technology companies. We have recently invested in 2 companies: Altech in South Africa and Rancard in Ghana.” said Tobi Oke, Investment Director, Intel Capital.

Etisalat launches first Arabic mobile money system
MasterCard, National Bank of Egypt (NBE) and Etisalat today announced the launch of the mobile payment wallet in Egypt, which will bring Etisalat Egypt’s subscriber base safe and convenient payment services through the power of their mobile phones.
The newly introduced program is an early implementation of the Mobile Payment Solution that MasterCard and Egyptian Banks Company (EBC) introduced to this 94 million mobile users market and represents the world’s first ever interoperable Arabic mobile money program.
“Flous”, which means money in Arabic, will use the Etisalat mobile network and can be deployed on any mobile phone. The first phase of this program will allow subscribers to transfer money to anyone participating in the service using their mobile phones, and to load cash on their phones or take out cash through over 100 of Etisalat’s branches and 305 of NBE’s branches across Egypt.
This represents a new era for mobile users as the service will be the fastest, most convenient and secure money transfer channel in Egypt. The second phase of the program will allow subscribers to pay their bills through their mobile phones, top up their mobile prepaid lines, and pay for goods and services at several merchants’ locations in Egypt, in addition to using it for e-commerce payments globally.
Commenting on this landmark announcement, Mohamed Kamel Bayoumi, Managing Director, EBC said “We have chosen MasterCard to partner with us on this transformative mobile money program to benefit from their global experience as they have successfully implemented more than 30 such programs around the world. Our objective, together with the Central Bank and the Government, is to bring financial services to the fingertips of each and every Egyptian. This collaborative initiative will allow us to achieve that.”
“Etisalat connects people from around the world, and we have developed some of the world’s most advanced networks by constantly adding value to the infrastructure. Mobile phones can be used for far more than calls and messages. In a world where smartphones and mobile browsing have become commonplace, it is only natural that mobile devices be used to conduct everyday transactions, especially with their current levels of penetration in the Egyptian market” said Eng. Saeed AlHamli, CEO, Etisalat Egypt

Senate Rejects Patience Jonathan’s 4 Billion Naira Request To Build First Ladies House
Posted June 6th, 2013 by Isabella
The Senate has rejected the N4bn appropriated for the construction of the First Ladies Mission in Africa.
The Mission is being headed by Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
The amount was proposed in the estimate of the Federal Capital Territory’s, FCT, 2013 budget appropriation.
This was as the lawmakers appropriated N259.65bn with a surplus of N48.71bn for the FCT 2013 statutory budget.
This year’s budget is less than that of 2012 fiscal year, which was N306.41bn.
The senators described the financial allocation for the construction of the secretariat in Abuja as a misplaced priority.
The lawmakers said that the N4bn would be distributed for the provision of infrastructure and meet the pressing needs in satellite towns.
The senators also explained that they disapproved the allocation because the land upon which the proposed secretariat would be sited is currently under litigation.
“We cannot appropriate for a land that is not available,” they added.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had ruled that the land proposed by the FCT Ministry for the first ladies’ building belonged to an organisation owned by wife of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, Turai after a protracted legal battle.
A breakdown of the appropriation report, presented by the Senate Committee Chairman on FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi (PDP Kogi- West) showed that N48.6bn, representing 18.7 per cent, was approved for personnel costs.
Also N50.58bn, representing 19.5 per cent, was for overhead costs while N160.46 representing 61.8 per cent was for capital projects for the 2013 fiscal year.
A further breakdown of the budget indicated that the total recurrent expenditure stood at N99.18bn, representing 38.2 per cent while the entire budget stood at N259.64bn.
Adeyemi urged his colleagues to consider the budget because of time constraints since a lot of work needs to be done in the ongoing year.
He said the committee, in carrying out its oversight duties, identified critical areas for development of the territory and ensure improved standard of living for its inhabitants.
“The committee jostled with the budget estimates, deploying funds to meet areas of critical needs like roads, water, health, education and development of satellite towns within the territory, city maintenance and cleaning, recreational facilities, construction of rehabilitation centres, agriculture, transportation, security services and rehabilitation of ECOWAS Parliament Building”, he said.
Adeyemi said his committee noted that the performance of the statutory allocation in 2012 was only 43 per cent, saying most of the projects earmarked for the year were still ongoing due to what he referred to as “overbearing ineptitude of getting the Due Process Certificate”.
“It was further observed that new and ongoing projects were not sufficiently funded due to delay in the release of funds occasioned by bureaucratic bottlenecks,” he added.
Senate President David Mark, who presided over the session, said that the nation’s capital had not lived up to expectation, stressing that the administrators must urgently sit up.
According to Mark: “The FCT is supposed to be a model town, a model capital city, and having passed this budget, we expect that the FCT will be a model capital city where everything functions, where we must get all the roads to be okay.
“I think there isn’t enough satellite development going on. And so there is a lot of congestion in town. Street lights are not working, the streets are not being kept in very good condition, the gardens and lawns are not being maintained. I think there are a lot of areas where FCT has to work very properly.”
The Senate President advised the relevant Senate committees on FCT to carry out oversight functions with a view to repositioning the area.
“This is where we have to employ your oversight functions, our responsibility, to make sure that things work properly,” he said.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives for the umpteenth time yesterday, shelved the proposed amendments to the 2013 Appropriation bill referring it to a joint committee.
The House made the referral to its Committees on Judiciary, Justice and Business and Rules after considering a Constitutional Order raised by Hon. Yakubu Dogara
Dogara in his Order, warned that the passage of the proposed amendments by the President would be in serious breach of section 81 subsections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the constitution.
He also told the House that contrary to the section, the said proposals from the Presidency could not be defined and therefore had no place in the litany of legislative items the Green Chamber should consider.
He also argued that instead of bringing forth a supplementary budget at this time, the President was bringing in the same proposals he earlier presented before a joint session.
Section 81(1) states that: “The President shall cause to be prepared and laid before each House of the National Assembly at any time in each financial year estimates of the revenues and expenditure of the Federation for the next following financial year.”
Dogara’s objection had overwhelming support among members of the House leading to a summary referral of the proposed amendments by Speaker Aminu Tambuwal to the committees.
The House also took on a bill proposing that 40 per cent of Nigeria’s annual national budget must be dedicated to capital projects over the next 10 years through the second reading.
The sponsor of the Bill, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who led debate on the Bill, said that 70 per cent of the annual budget is allocated to recurrent expenditure while a paltry 30 per cent was allocated to capital expenditure for the last 10 years.
According to him: “This bill has the capacity to affect the lives of Nigerians and that of our constituents. The intention of the bill is to fund capital projects for the next 10 years, because this will stimulate our economy for the good.”
He explained further that even the 30 per cent capital projects allocations were not properly utilised as shown by official statistics.
In supporting the bill, Deputy Leader of the House, Hon. Leo Ogor, said there was a need to determine the mechanism and manner with which funds could be appropriated and applied.
The Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Hon. John Enoh, said that in the last several years, the Executive has had difficulties in trying to bridge the gap between recurrent and capital expenditures, hence the need to fix a percentage for infrastructure development.
Hon. Patrick Ikhariale and Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai, however kicked against the bill, arguing that the constitution was very clear on the role of the legislature in appropriation of funds and the House would be going contrary to its provisions in making the law

"My Mother Passed On Her Hips To Me With Vengeance" ? Omotola
Posted by Femi Katin on June 6, 2013 at 12:40 PM |
Excerpt:
Omotola: There is no major secret. That’s the truth. Most of them were inherited. I inherited the good stuff, so also the bad one. If you see my mom’s picture, she actually looked like a young girl. Till she passed on, we used to call her forever young, even before that song came out.
My mom had a teenager look, even when she was almost 50. She was a very hippy and curvy woman. That, she passed on to me with vengeance. That’s why it has been a very big struggle for me to stay as slim as my job requires.
But people are saying you had done an implant that perhaps brought out you hips
Omotola: I have also heard that but there is nothing like that. I have never done any surgery or implant. It’s just me being extremely careful and conscious of my body, job and everything. Naturally, as a human being, sometimes i get it perfectly right, sometimes, the body just does what it wants to do. I just keep trying.

In Pictures: Acer’s New York City press launch
Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Acer revealed
their new line-up of tablets and notebooks at an international launch
conference in New York City last week Friday and offered the world a
glimpse into their future strategy to increase global market share.
The company showed off its latest products in the Ultrabook, notebook
and tablet segments, focussing heavily on user experiences rather than
mass-producing a wide variety of units.
ITNewsAfrica was in New York City to cover the event, and captured some images from the launch.
“For our current strategy, we are employing the factor of Duality –
where Touch and Type will be the next new trend. In the near future, we
will need to design User Interfaces that take full advantage of duality.
Users desire to choose the platform they want, and Acer has chosen to
design all kinds of design features to meet these consumer needs,” said
Acer Chairman and CEO J.T. Wang during the press conference.
